Fun Day in Anchorage

No, I didn't fly to Anchorage for the weekend, although that would have been very cool. Instead, please check out Ina in Alaska's post of Saturday Market in Downtown Anchorage. She has beautifully captured the atmosphere unique to Alaska.
I have to wonder if I look as touristy as the couple Ina found.

Sassy Says

Happiness is a Warm Puppy
~Charles Schultz

My mother bred her Schnauzers, Penny and Patrick in 1999 and we had a litter of puppies. I use the pronoun we because I was the doggie midwife, helping deliver the litter of 7 puppies. I'm not sure where Mother got the idea that I knew anything about dog whelping, but when she called in the middle of the night saying it was time, I went racing over to hold Penny's paw.

Fortunately, Penny had a relatively easy delivery and was an excellent mother, which left me with very little to do, other than calm Mother.
There was a period of excitement when one of the pups was stillborn. The poor little thing just lay there and Penny wanted nothing to do with it. Mother was pacing the kitchen floor, with a glass of wine in one hand and a cigarette in the other screaming, "Kit, do something!"
(My mother grew up in Savannah and sounded more like Paula Dean than Paula did herself.)

I had watched enough episodes of Emergency Vets that I knew to resuscitate a puppy by gently rubbing the little fellow in an attempt to stimulate and warm. When he didn't respond to gentle rubs, I got a bit more aggressive and started breathing my warm breath on him. He finally gave out a whimper, Penny immediately started licking him and within a couple of minutes he was nursing away with his litter mates.

I knew after that experience that I had made the right decision, to by become an educator instead of a veterinarian.

Dog Portraits

Zack

Buddy

Sassy

A couple of days ago Jack's tall guy posted a cool site where you can do all kinds of things with your pictures, including having a portrait drawn. When I asked if anyone would be interested in having their portrait posted, they all insisted. I must say it's much faster, less expensive and easier on all concerned this way.
Thanks for sharing Tall Guy!

Memorial Day 2009

Please take time to remember the men, women, and dogs who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our great nation free.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I grew up on Marine Corps bases and heard this special tune played daily.
I was taught from a very early age to respect the flag and the men and women in uniform who put their lives at risk, insuring our Feedom.
"Colors" is the ceremonial raising or lowering of our nation's flag. On a military base, you will typically hear some type of music during colors, perhaps the national anthem or "To the Color" while the flag is raised or lowered. If you are driving, you should stop your car until the last note sounds. If you are outside your vehicle, home or place of business, you should stop moving and stand respectfully at attention, placing your right hand over your heart and facing the direction of the main flagpole on base, until the music ends. Men and boys should remove their hats. Of course, active duty military members, veterans and Scouts in uniform should render a military salute.
Michael Vick Released from Prison
From ESPN:
HAMPTON, Va. -- Michael Vick is out of prison and headed home, penniless and reviled for running a vicious dogfighting ring, but hopeful for a second chance at his once-charmed life as a star NFL quarterback.
The suspended quarterback served 19 months in prison on the dogfighting conviction that capped one of the most astonishing falls in sports history -- one that stole his wealth and popularity.
Our opinion of him hasn't changed...
How about you?
Happy Birthday to Me!!!
If you saw this post earlier, there were no pictures included.
I forgot to add the pictures on the original post.
No wise cracks about my age and forgetfulness, please.
Mother and Me
May 17, 1956
It was so easy to give a birthday party 50 years ago. Just throw down some blankets, have a cake, give the kids a hat-
Instant Party!
Mother asked me what kind of cake I wanted. I requested a devil's food cake with white icing and pink coconut. She made me the same cake every year.
Life was Good!
We Received an Award
As a first grade teacher, I gave out awards daily for good work, behavior, manners, etc. But guess what? Teachers enjoy receiving awards, too.
We are very proud to accept the "Paw"some Blog Award from our big, yellow, gentle, handsome friend Moose at Dogtalk.
“This award is presented to those dog bloggers out there who know the meaning of GREATNESS. Their blogs are consistently interesting, funny, or informative. Their KINDNESS is extended to others without expectation of it’s return, and their FRIENDSHIP inspires others to do EXTRAORDINARY things. These are the blogs you can’t wait to read everyday.
In short, they are AWE-INSPIRING, full of wonder, and simply PAWsome!Pass this award on to 4 others who you feel exemplify a “Paw”some Blog, and leave a note saying why you think they deserve the Pawsome Award!”
As you can see by our list of favorite blogs, we had many to choose from, but we narrowed it down to the following 4 blogs:
1. Mason Dixie- Mason and her mom are so very gracious, sending gifts to doggies all the time. Mason has been working hard on her diet and looking gooood! She is Buddy's inspiration as he diets. Buddy has a big time crush on Mason and she doesn't mind that he is "big boned".
2. Daily Dose of Jack- Jack and his Tall Guy keep Rama laughing with their funny pictures and text. Jack is a beautiful Lab. Sassy has a crush on Jack, but he's playing hard to get.
3. Otso- Otso is a big, yellow, gentle, handsome Lab who lives in Australia. He recently showed his support for Zack (& and his need for wigs) by wearing a veil (curtain) on his head. He's always up to something "Down Under". Sassy says he's a cutie too.
4. The Bumpass Hounds- The hoomans of Bumpass Hounds are kind, loving folks who have opened their home and hearts to many homeless dogs and cats. Their most recent rescue is Radar (formerly Radio), a blind Golden Retriever pup who has parvo virus. It takes very special people to rescue a special needs pup like Radar. Please visit their blog and see all the beautiful lives Bill and AnnMarie have saved.
