More Surgery for Buddy

We returned to vet today, 2 weeks after Buddy's TPLO surgery, hoping for stitches to be removed and rehab to begin. However, it was discovered that Buddy's pes anserinus ( group of muscles) is torn, and he needs more surgery.

Needless to say, we are extremely disappointed, but the vet reassured us that this is not a major setback...tell that to Buddy. :(
Surgery is scheduled for Thursday morning...will keep you posted and Buddy would appreciate positive thoughts! :)

Woe is me...

Ob-li-di,

Ob-la-da,

Life goes on-brah!

Lala how the life goes on.

Ob-la-di,

Ob-la-da,

life goes on, brah!...

Buddy has been the best patient, post-op, TPLO surgery.
He seems to appreciate everything we do for him.
He enjoys the ice compresses and massages, and he only has to wear the cone when I'm asleep or in another room, neither which have occurred much this week.

Unfortunately, as he continues to improve and feel better, it is harder to keep him under control for potty breaks, and moving about the house, safely.
We return to orthopedic vet Tuesday. May 31.

Sorry I haven't had much time to visit blogs, I know you all understand!

Beam Me Up, Scottie

Just checking in to let you all know I am home and doing well.

At least that's what they tell me...I'm taking tramadol and don't really know, or care, where I am.

Thanks for all the well wishes and encouraging comments;
I know it made Rama feel better to read the success stories.

I'm going back to sleep now...
check with y'all later...

If I keep my head under the bed, I won't have to wear that darned cone!

Positive Thoughts for Buddy, Please

As I type, Buddy is having TPLO surgery in Atlanta.

Long story short, we had an appointment with an orthopedic vet at Veterinary Referral Surgical Practice this morning. It didn't take long for Dr. Noone to determine that Buddy's cranial cruciate ligament is completely ruptured.

There will be a 12 week recovery period, but all I can think about right now is getting my boy through surgery.
Please send him some positive thougths and energy.
Thank you and I will keep you updated.
~K

Updated:
5:00 PM EST

Dr. Noone just called.
Surgery went well and Buddy is doing fine.
We will be able to bring him home tomorrow and begin the very long road to recovery.
As Dr. Noone said, the vet's part is easy compared to the rehabiliation period for the pup and the peeps.

I'm just relieved that he is out of surgery and resting.
Thank you for your continued thoughts and prayers.
~K

Hurry home, Bubba!
We miss you!

Update on Cami, by Cami's Mom

After Cami’s first seizure on March 14, I had hoped it would be a one-time event. Four weeks to the day, however, she had her second one, three days later the third, and 24 hours later the fourth. Though the subsequent seizures were less violent and shorter, the vet suggested that it was time to start Phenobarbital. I reluctantly agreed, acknowledging that the med would be the lesser of the evils. We started the med on April 16, and it turned her into a limp noodle. After two doses, the vet cut it in half. She was still woozy, but not limp and the vet said the lethargy would dissipate as her system absorbed the medication. The good news is that there have been no additional seizures!

The rest of the story is that I had been noticing even before the seizures that Cami seemed hesitant particularly in places like the dark hallway. I decided she probably was developing cataracts as many poodles do. About the time she began the Phenobarbital, I noticed she would not move forward at all and would often turn in circles as though trying to get her bearings. I began to think she was blind, but was unsure if her vision were just poor and being compromised by the meds. A trip back to the vet confirmed blindness, and he referred us to an ophthalmologist for assessment.

Tests indicated that her eyes are healthy so the cause of blindness is in the brain or in the optic nerve. Coupled with the seizures, it is possible that there is a brain mass. It is also possible that her immune system is attacking the nerve so he is treating for that with antibiotics and prednisone. If that is the case, there should be vision improvement with two weeks of treatment.

The wonderful news is that after two days of treatment, Cami seems like she sees! It may be that the Phenobarbital is in her system enough that she is no longer lethargic and can operate from memory and smell. She can move around the house, walk in the yard, and get herself off the porch, back on the porch and in! She is in many ways like my puppy…rolling over for belly rubs, hiding her eyes behind her paws, and barking at unexplained noises and the dogs next door! I am grateful!

Cami and Susu

In 10 days she will have blood work to check the Phenobarbital levels and they may be decreased. The vet thinks the dose may still be too high, but a one month check is standard procedure. June 1 she goes back to the ophthalmologist. Thank you for your kind thoughts. Cami is a fighter!
