Broken Tail Bone

Our mom's tail bone is broken and she is unable to sit comfortably.

It's not broken, Sassy; the doctor says she is suffering with Sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction,
which is a fancy way of saying, Rama's getting old!

She's in a good bit of pain, and will start physical therapy next week.

Losing 20 pounds would certainly help Rama's condition...but you didn't hear that from ME!

In the meantime, we are "suspending"
the DogDaze campaign until further notice.
We will miss y'all,
and hope to be back soon!
Ciao for now!

  8. I've never heard of that happening before--I've heard of 'cold tail' before (one of my Goldens had it) but it wasn't painful, just a tail that wouldn't wag...I really do hope Rama feels better soon, and I do hope YOU are doing well too!!

    Take care!!

  12. Another common cause of SI joint dysfunction is pregnancy. During pregnancy, hormones are released in the woman's body that allows ligaments to relax. This prepares the body for childbirth. Relaxation of the ligaments holding the SI joints together allows for increased motion in the joints and can lead to increased stresses and abnormal wear. The additional weight and walking pattern (altered gait) associated with pregnancy also places additional stress on the SI joints.

  17. Oh no, that has to be so painful and uncomfortable. The Momster says she so understands the whole getting old thing. We hope the PT helps make things much better. Paws crossed and lots of good thoughts and prayers from Mom.

  20. OUCH!!! So sorry about this Kit :(

Hope you feel better soon. I am heading back to awful weather in ANC on Saturday. I am super glad I missed all the wind, rain and ice. But the winter has just begun. All 4 poodles are with their caregiver at her home. I prefer them in her care. Expensive and very well worth it. xoxo

  22. Okay, I'm back...I'm back because something about this post bothered me. So much so that I woke up this morning thinking about it and YOU...and now I see why! For some reason, in the rush of the day and in my foggy, foggy brain I was thinking SASSY had done something to her tail bone...What a dope I am! I'm so sorry that I didn't pay closer attention!! But now that the fog has cleared (at least for now) know that I'm sending lots of good vibes and healing thoughts in your direction! I hope you're feeling better soon. You and your friendship have become something that I value, and hope that you're feeling better very, very soon!! Take care, okay?

  26. Thank goodness Rama doesn't have a broken tail bone, there's nothing you can do for that!
    Been there done that!
Can't put it in a cast or a sling!
Just sitting on a doughnut thing!

Hoping for good results from the physical therapy next week!

  29. Hi,

Just dropping in for the first time from Sherry's blog.

Just love all the doggies! We have two Labs, too. :)

I hope you feel much better soon. I can identify with a sore back/tailbone.

    All the best,
    Lois

  31. NO, JackDaddy (You stinker),
Read my lips: I AM NOT PREGNANT!

But if I am, I hope it's a litter of Labs, because I'm sending one to you! :)

  32. Hi Y'all,

You better take good care of your Rama y'all!

My Human tells me she broke her tail bone in a fall off a horse onto a rock when she was young. She couldn't walk very well.

So Fiona, I doubt that physical therapy includes many walkies...especially with the likes of all those Labs.

    Y'all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  33. Oh poor Rama! I know how many human activities seem to involve sitting. Sure hope she can get some relief.

Any way you three can sneak in to her PT sessions with the camera? I am thinking her bottom exercises would be most entertaining.

Of course if humans had proper tails like doggies they might not be prone to such injuries.

    Slobbers,
    Mango

  34. Hi Kit! Hope PT is doing you some good. I would LOVE to volunteer at the 2012 Iditarod with you! That is the only way I could do it!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ouch... hmmm.. maybe I should start doing the PT exercises NOW, since I've been told I have some degenerative stuff going on in my SI joint. For some reason it never dawned on me that this could eventually cause sitting problems, I was thinking more along the lines of not being able to RUN. Well, I hope PT gets you back into good sitting and blogging shape, because we will miss you! I've just found your blog, and was looking forward to reading about your adventures in north GA, my old stomping ground. :)

  36. That just plain sucks. Hopefully you're on the mend by Christmas!

  37. We are so sorry to read about your Rama. We are sending her lots of positive thoughts and paws crossed she heals quickly. She is very smart to take some time off to take care of herself. Give your Rama lots of licks and tails wags so she heals quickly and gets well soon!

Have a very Merry Christmas and a fantastic New Year!

  38. Oh noes! Has she been wagging it too much? Maybe she whacked it against something. I do that when I am extra happy! Too bad she is not having puppies like jack thought... I bet that would be superfun! I hope this does not adversely affect your walkies! Feel better soon Rama!
