Monday's Mosaic Memory ~Mother and The Pups

Mother and The Pups
Cleveland, GA
~1998

Mother loved her Miniature Schnauzers, Penelope (Penny) and Patrick (Patty). It was decided that they should be bred, with the intent of giving my step-sister 2 puppies and finding loving homes for the others.

My mother had only one child, me; and I'm sure she was sedated as much as medically allowed during my birth.
I have no children, so it's safe to say that between the two of us,

we didn't know nutin' 'bout birthin' no babies
or puppies!

Somehow, I was appointed midwife and was expected to help Penny deliver her pups.
Why are puppies and babies always born in the middle of the night?

All went well until pup #4 was stillborn. I suctioned out his nose and throat, still no movement.

Mother is frantically pacing the kitchen floor, with a cigarette in one hand and a glass of wine in the other screaming,

"Kit, Do SOMETHING!"

I started vigorously rubbing the little body between the palms of my hands and breathing warm air down his throat. I was about to give up when I saw the slightest movement of a paw. My step-father had gotten the blow dryer and we gently blew warm air on the little body.
When he let out a little squeal like a pig, we knew he was going to make it!
That special little fellow would become one of my step-sister's pups.

Mother and I had a wonderful time helping Penny raise her pups.
I would have to say, that was one of the happiest experiences Mother and I ever shared.

Thank you for allowing me to share it with you.

Today would have been Mother's eighty-first birthday.

Sassy Says

Just call my name
and I'll be there.

I'll Be There" is a soul song written by Berry Gordy, Bob West, Hal Davis, and Willie Hutch, which resulted in two U.S. number 1 hit singles: the original 1970 recording by American vocal quintet The Jackson 5.
The Jackson 5 original was recorded for Motown Records, and released as the first single from their Third Album in 1970. Produced by the songwriters, "I'll Be There" was The Jackson 5's fourth number 1 hit in a row, following "I Want You Back," "ABC," and "The Love You Save." "I'll Be There" is also notable as the most successful single released by Motown during its "Detroit era" (1959-1972). It is also the fourth in the group's string of four consecutive number one pop hits, making them the first black male group to achieve this. (wikipedia)

Apologies

We would like to apologize for not visiting your blogs the last couple of days.
Rama has been cleaning house from top to bottom, in an attempt to make the place look and smell like three large, shedding, drooling (Buddy) Labs don't live here.

Good luck with that, Lady!
(Giving her the devil eyes!)

In the meantime, we have been neglected and confined to the dog room.

 Can you imagine?

(Listen carefully.
Did they mention Tall Guy?)

Someone, please save us!

Somehow Rama found time to make this video.

Hope you don't get car sick.

Monday's Mosaic Memory ~Show and Tell

Friday was Show and Tell day in my classroom. The excitement started early as each student entered the classroom, trying to conceal their "surprise" in book bags, old Wal-Mart bags, and under their shirts.

With a little planning and modeling by the teacher, Show and Tell offers a positive learning environment in a casual, relaxed setting.

I honestly looked forward to it as much as the kids.

Sassy Says

Love is kinda crazy with a spooky
little girl like me*.
(* you)

This week's musical memory is by a group with whom I happen to have a personal connection.

See if you can follow this:
My first college roommate's brother was college roommates with Dennis Yost at Jacksonville University.
(Kind of a stretch, huh?)

The Classics IV was a band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1965. They are given credit for beginning the "soft southern rock" sound. The band and its lead singer Dennis Yost are principally known for the hits "Spooky" and "Stormy", both released in 1968 and both of which have become cover standards. (wikipedia)

My favorite song by The Classics IV is "Everyday With You Girl", but I thought this would be more appropriate today.

My grandfather and I had a special relationship.
When USMC sent Daddy to Korea in 1960,  Mother and I lived with my grandparents for 13 months. I was the only grandchild at that time and Grandpa spoiled me rotten
I loved every minute of it!

I'm Juz Sayin'

All work and no play,
makes Jack a dull boy.

No, no, no!
I'm not talking about my Labra-pal, Jack.

I'm referring to the fact that there has been too much work and not enough doggie-centered activities around here lately.

The Peeps call it "home improvements."
I call it a lot of unnecessary noise and puppy neglect.

Anyway, I convinced them it was time for a break.
(If you saw Saturday's post, you'll agree, Rama's been sniffing too much Cabot stain.
So, we've loaded up the RV and are headed off into the wild blue yonder.

Ciao for now!
(why does that make me hungry?)

Sassy Says

You made me so very happy,
I'm so glad you came into my life.

"You've Made Me So Very Happy" is a song that was written by Brenda Holloway, Patrice Holloway, Frank Wilson and Berry Gordy, and was released first as a single in 1967 by Brenda Holloway on the Tamla label. The song was later a huge hit for jazz-rock band Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1969.
Blood, Sweat & Tears, the group's self-titled second album, was produced by James William Guercio and released in late 1968. The album was much more pop-oriented, featuring decidedly fewer compositions from within the band. (David Clayton-Thomas, however, had already mounted a solo career as a singer/songwriter over this same time period, beginning with an album released in 1969 by Decca).[1] The record quickly hit the top of the charts, winning Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards over The Beatles' Abbey Road, among other nominees. wikipedia

I'd like to dedicate today's song to Ms. Kim at Golden Pines, Ms. Phyl, and everyone who helps with rescuing and fostering. Thank you for all the love and comfort you provide.

From all the pups you have saved...

Some of you may be asking, "Sassy, why are you so excited today?"

Well, today is no ordinary day.

Today is DogDaze Daddy's birthday!

EditingMySpace.com - Happy Birthday

This week's 1970 melodic memory is dedicated to DDD (DogDaze Daddy), who loves Sly and The Family Stone.

"Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)", released in December 1969, is a 1970 hit single recorded by Sly and the Family Stone, recognized as one of the greatest and most influential funk songs of all time. The song, double a-sided with "Everybody Is a Star", reached number one on the soul single charts for five weeks, and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1970. wikipedia

Farewell, Hummers!

This was our last "resident" hummer of the season.
For the past several weeks Squeak sat atop the Japanese Maple tree, guarding the feeder,
through extreme heat, rain, and wind.
I haven't seen her since last weekend, however, I have seen several visitors stopping by for a quick drink at the feeder.
It's always sad to see them go and I find myself wishing  we had hummingbirds in our area year round.
But then, I guess, it wouldn't be such a treat to see them  April through October.
Until next year Hummers,
