It’s Christmas Bird Count Time Again

Audubon's annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will take place between December 14, 2009 and January 5, 2010. This count is the the longest running citizen-science survey in the world.
I hope you'll participate this year.

BTW, Hubby has successfully captured and relocated 17 squirrels. Our trees and feeders are filled with happy birdies, which should make our bird count more successful.

To celebrate the return of the birds, Hubby bought this beautiful puzzle at our local Farmer's Exchange. The Northern Cardinal is my favorite bird. This should keep me busy for a while.

Happy Trails,

Hmmm, Christmas birds....
7 swans, 6 geese, 4 calling birds, 3 french hens, 2 turtle doves and that darn partridge.

That makes 23.

Did I win? :)

Actually I'll go read up on how to do the OFFICIAL bird count and see if I can participate! I did see the most vibrant blue bird I've ever seen about a month ago. I think someone told me it was probably an indigo bunting. It was beautiful!

Today I saw a bird on the ground by the feeder that I did not recognize. After much thumbing of pages in the bird book, I think it was a fox sparrow.

I like cardinals too...which is a good thing since we have several pair at the feeder every day.

Your mom seems pretty smart to me so I don't think you will get a very long nap! Although you look pretty comfy!

And I think your dad is way cool for relocating the squirrels and not hurting them. Humans that love animals rock!

The cardinal is such a great bird!

I LOVED seeing them in Tucson, AZ,
the farthest west they come!
Many a CBC we slogged through hill and dale for the grand old count!
I'm always amazed at places like in Alaska that have it, despite the harsh weather!!

Good luck putting the puzzle together!!

Hi there!! Yes! Mom's dad always leads one of the local Christmas bird counts. And, loves being up super early for the owl counts!
Love the cardinal puzzle! Hope you get to participate on the count, would be neat to hear about your count findings.
Blessings.

How do you count birds?

Sounds very difficult! I can barely count my paws.

Beautiful puzzle and great pictures. Happy to see the Santas. I still wonder about any baby squirrels that were left behind. Are there any at this time of year? I do know it is good, though, for the birds to have their seed in peace! I will have to read about the bird count. Wish I knew about it when Mamma was really in to the birds. When I saw an indigo bunting, I thought it was the most stunning I had ever seen. SH

Bird count sounds interesting, but I dislike puzzles! Only like the finished product lol. After Dogs, birds are my most fave.

Hi Ms. K
I love Cardinals too!!! Good luck with the count. You have a yard full of happy fine feather friends.
Good luck with the puzzle seems your assistant has fizzled out on you,
We have the little ruby crowned kinglets at the feeder now. I love to watch them. They hover so I call them my winter hummers

Thank you for the bird count reminder! I usually do this every year. I love to do puzzles too in the winter! Give all those sweet dogs of yours a rub on the belly for me!

A big Puzzle at Christmas was always a family tradition here until all the little grandkidlets came along - now there are too many little hands wanting to help and too many disappearing puzzle pieces. Another year or so and the tradition will resume. Have fun working on it.

Love the puzzle! We have LOTS of squirrels too. In fact, they ate all the peanut/sunflower/cranberry/popcorn garland in the "bird Christmas tree" before I could get out to take a pic (it had been raining for a few days straight). We have a pair of Cardinals that managed to get a few of the peanuts. They are a beautiful bird ~ I can see why they are your favourite ♥

When my mom lived in a national park those darn bird people would wake her up very early in the morning lol. Imagine people around your house (cabin) with binoculars...I agree about the Christmas birds--no need to go out in the cold to count you can sing the answer.

Better keep your eyes on those puzzle pieces. Momma poop detective found one of our ornaments in the back yard today if you know what I mean. Hehehe.
