Hi Friends,
Kit here. Like you, I am extremely saddened and disturbed by the loss of lives (human and wildlife), loss of livelihoods, and the long term adverse effects caused by the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon.

I respect your opinions and would like to hear from you on this subject.
Should BP be held responsible for this environmental crisis? Any suggestions on how to prevent another catastrophic oil rig accident?
Thank you,
~K

No wonder the stuff that makes the car go is so expensive! They keep spilling and hurting all the poor creatures that live in/around/on/near the sea!

I'm scared of ducks...

Hello Kit! We lived in Anchorage at the time of the Exxon Valdez disaster and it was catastrophic on the environment!! Knowing that, I do think that BP should be totally responsible!! I also think that the US should have the same (and better) safey regulations on their off shore rigs that other countries have--I heard yesterday that the off shore oil wells in the US aren't required to have a remote-control shut-off switch which is required in two other major oil-producing nations as last-resort protection against underwater spills. Why??!! Because it was decided that it was too much of an expense for the oil companies--I wonder what politician and/or government agency decided that preventing damage to our precious natural environment was not as important as saving the oil companies some money??!! It really gets my hackles up...Aren't you glad you asked??

I love the pic of you and your mom! I have pics of me and Mamma and Daddy there feeding pigeons. I called it "my park." Nothing egocentric about that! Apparently we didn't go as often once there were Rusty and Terry, too! Or they didn't make as many pictures!

In regard to the oil spill...it is catastrophic. I have no idea who should be held responsible. I don't know if what I read is true. If BP was in compliance with government regs, then the government is responsible. If they were not in compliance, then BP should be held responsible. Regardless of the direct costs you named, there will be the indirect costs in higher seafood prices everywhere, higher taxes as the government puts new safeguards in place, and definitely higher gas prices as BP bails out and other oil companies put new safeguards in place. I hate to be cynical, but I don't see any way around tremendous trickle down impact beyond the impact you listed. Now we are worried over here about their plans to drill off Tybee if oil is found. At least it is on hold since this accident. But the fact remains, we are a nation of oil-greedy consumers...the oil will have to come from somewhere until and if we figure out how to conserve. I could go on, but I really don't know the answer. My prayers are with those persons who lost their lives and with those who will lose their jobs. The damage to animals and environment is incomprehensible. SH

I agree with you, Kit, it is totally sad for all the crew killed in the explosion and now the wildlife that will be lost! BP should be responsible, because there are so many people that make their livelihood from the Gulf that will be destroyed! Before they drill they should have an effective catastrophic recovery plan in place!

But it will probably take years just like the Exxon Valdez did for Alaska! They are only JUST getting money out of the oil company!!

I know so very little on the subject of rigs and who should be held responsible... I am afraid I couldn't offer any valuable suggestions or advice. The picture of you and your Mom is great.

Morning Kit what a beautiful picture of you and Mom!!!
I don't have any suggestions on the oil spill but I hope and pray someone comes up with something. Yesterday paper showed one of the shore birds being cleaned by volunteers,

Lovely pic of you and Mom! I too, don't understand enough about this situation to make any statements. But....I am glad that some wildlife will be saved due to some wonderful folk!

Apparantly BP did not have a proper shut off valve at the bottom of the rig. They did not have a sufficient back up plan which has caused this enormous catastrophe to the wildlife and eco systems. Hell Yes! They should be held accountable.

We know first hand about this in Alaska from the Exxon Valdez disaster 20+ years ago due to a drunken tanker captain. Devastated Prince William Sound.

And not only that, for those who filed claims for loss of livelihood due to the Exxon Valdez disaster had to endure over 20 years of court battles all the way up to the Supreme Court so get ready for BP to do the same.. some claimants have died waiting for their settlements, we have had a few clients and their Estates are just now getting paid. But the damage to Mother Earth and her creatures big and small is overwhelming.

Corporations have to become better caretakers of our planet.....

That picture is precious!! I love going through pictures of the past!!

I think BP should be responsible and spend some of their billions of dollars to help clean up their mess and figure out a way to prevent it from happening. I saw it on the news and I was very upset...not only about all of the lives lost but what it is doing to the environment and the wildlife.
Lots of love, Debbie and Holly

That picture is precious! Oil spills/disasters are horrible. It is the wildlife that pays the price and the men/women who make a living in those areas. I guess my question would be why shouldn't BP be held responsible?

Yes, BP should be held responsible. It's heartbreaking to think about animals like your beautiful pelicans.

I think that the first thing that each of us can do is try to reduce our oil consumption. Drive less, combine trips, turn off lights, and consider getting solar. We have solar electricity and hot water. We actually make enough energy to pump it back onto the grid in the summer (and our electric company pays us for it)!

Beautiful picture of you and your mom. Love that little dress!

Yes, BP should be held responsible, in the courts if necessary. As to how to prevent it, I haven't a clue. Maybe an engineer would have some suggestions?

Lovely family photo - the good old days.

The situation in the Gulf is just horrific. We do think BP should be held responsible and the government also needs to be sure it has the proper controls in place. The sad part is the incredible amount of time it will take to get it all worked out while the wildlife suffer.

I love all of your pics from your past...so sweet.

As for BP, heck yes, they ARE responsible! This saddens me so much...all that poor wildlife not to mention the impact it will have on human lives as a result of the impact on the animals and plants!! I realize that we are a country very reliant on oil but I wish we could use more eco-friendly fuels/resources...I don't understand how they are even allowed to drill into the ocean floor....seems absurd to me. :(

Lovely family photo!!!
This spill is so unfortunate. Big business has an unbelieveable grip on our economy, with little controls upfront on potential environmental impacts. When will the environment truly be Number 1 in all aspects of our lives and those of our future generations? We can't do enough to prevent these "unlikely, or virtually impossible" accidents. We just can't take these chances....

Hugs and snaggle-tooth kisses,

BP should absolutely be on the hook. They reap the profits, they need to assume the risk.

I'm struck by the intelligence of all the dogs that left comments here... when I first saw your question, I didn't think you would get any responses. Perhaps I've been too hasty in my assessment of the dog blog community.
