Gumbie the Sled Dog in OK

Gumbie, the former sled dog from Warren Palfrey's 2009 Yukon Quest team,
visited his new fur-ever home in Oklahoma for a few days last week.

He has been spending the summer at Doug's cabin in CO (11,000') where I'm sure the temps are a bit cooler than OK.

Gumbie met the rest of his new family while in OK, including the canine residents, Lilly and Max. Doug reports that everyone got along well.

Gumbie and Lilly in OK

Buddy and I had some excitement last night. I took Buddy out to do his evening "business" around 10:15. About 10 minutes later I heard a commotion on the deck and assumed it was the raccoons raiding the bird feeders. Then I heard something louder and heavier than a raccoon. I turned on the outside lights and there was a huge, beautiful black bear standing on its hind legs with a paw in the feeder. Instead of running when I turned on the light, it got down on all fours and started walking toward the bedroom door, as if it thought I had a treat for it! At that point Buddy went crazy barking and the bear ambled off, no hurry!

Although I was initially terrified, I was also very excited to have the opportunity to see this beautiful creature. I just hope I don't see it again until Hubby gets home.

(Thanks for the call from ND to check on me, Vicki.)

Happy Trails,

Gumbie is going to love his fur-ever home and have nice furry buddies too.
I'm still shaking over that bear. I've always heard 'timing' is everything in life and boy was it true last night...a few minutes later taking Buddy out ohhhh I can't even think about that. So glad you and your sweet boy are fine. Be careful at tonight's outing.

What beautiful pics of Gumbie! I do hope this move works out. Seems like so far, so good. Can't believe about the bear! You and Buddy are having a multitude of visitors. He, Zack, and Sassy will need lots of talk time just to share their adventures! SH

Wow. And I thought I got a little freaked when we had moose in the yard - I can't imagine how I'd be with a bear!!!! (Now Mom makes sure all the outdoor lights are on before we go out at night so we aren't surprised...)

First there was the snake, then the scorpions, then the tree across the land and now black bears, oh my!! David has missed a lot of excitement!
I'm glad you are safe with Buddy! One more night to get through, hopefully no big four-legged visitors!

I bet Gumbie will love Oklahoma, except our temps this time of year can get horrible! We're going to be at least 100 by the end of the week, pretty hot for a sled dog and his fur coat. Where in Ok does he live? He's a celebrity, you know! So glad the bear didn't bother you and Buddy while you were outside! That's too close...

Unfortunately, someone may have already been feeding the bear. I hope he decides to stay far far away!

We think Grumbie will be so happy in his forever home.

Mom is a little jealous over the bear sighting though. Everyone around us sees bears, and we see where they have been, but never see them. It must be our Scottietude that keeps them away. A bear couldn't stand Piper's barking!!

I'm glad that the bear that came to our yard last year hasn't been back this year yet. When I went to the dump with Pawpa (oh the smells - dog heaven), the man there said that bear was around. A few street over there was reports of one. You and Rama need to be careful Buddy and just maybe go to the closest tree tonight stead of farther from the house.

Grrrs to y'all

I am glad that
Gumbie is doing good in his new home.

Oh my heavens Mom and I are glad that you are safe after the bear siting. Good job in protecting her. I don't think I would want to meet a bear, I think he would eat me.
