Sunday is for Family

I was an only child until my 10 birthday when my parents bought my sister, Brunie.  Brunie was a miniature, red Dachshund and my best friend from the first time I laid eyes on her.

My father was in the Marine Corps for 20 years, which meant many new schools for me. Being the new girl at school was no fun and then coming home to no siblings only made the situation worse.

When Brunie entered my life, I wasn't alone anymore. She spent countless hours riding in the backseat with me when Daddy
received transfer orders to a new post.
Our longest transfer was from Albany, GA to Philadelphia, PA.
She was always there during the awkward period of making new friends and settling into new routines. Brunie was also a great way to make new friends, because everyone wanted to meet my sweet Doxie!

I felt guilty when I graduated from high school and left home for college, leaving Brunie behind. She had always been there for me and now I was deserting her.
Little did I know that she would easily turn her love and affection over to my mother, which not only thrilled Mother, but also helped Mother cope with the empty nest syndrome.

Brunie lived to the ripe old age of 15. At the time of her death she had no teeth, was blind, deaf and her face was completely white,
but she continued to be a faithful companion until the very end.
She was a wonderful sister.

Happy Trails,

Doxies are definitely loyal and true! What a sweet story of your sister Brunie!
Growing up in LA, our neighbors had a doxie on either side of our home! They were like the kids on the block!
Thanks for sharing!

I have a similar story, only my "brother" was a red Cocker Spaniel named Misty. Dad got him for me when we moved to the farm and he lived to the ripe old age of 12 and was blind and white faced. I loved him so. Thank you for conjuring up that wonderful memory.

The love shared between a child and her dog...brings back memories of my first pet, a Siamese cat named Sandy. After him, many pets followed including three rabbits, a parakeet, quite a few dogs, a guinea pig. What did I want for my graduation present? A bassett hound! It's just part of my DNA to have a little friend...

what a sweet story!! your cute brunie was a wonderful sister and a faithful companion. you have such a big smile on your face as you hold her in the family picture. :)
my dad was air force and we moved a lot, too. my mom and dad let me pick out a dog from the humane society when i was 9. she was a black cockapoo terrier mix named whitney. we played dress up and went on walks all the time. we had to put her to sleep when she was 17 due to her health. she was such a wonderful friend and will always hold a piece of my heart.
yes, we got some thunderstorms yesteday evening and all through the night. booker and asa just slept right through them. i hope poor zack did alright? did you try the melatonin?

What a beautiful post, the love for your little sis comes through so deeply. I too understand the great confidence that comes from having your dog by your side in unfamiliar and intimidating human situations. Undaunted, they lead us through our fear and truly are our family. :)

Kit,
Just checked Dog Daze and saw the story about Brunie. I knew you had a dachshund growing up, but never saw pics. Now I know why you had such a soft spot for Becca. I'll never forget bringing her to school. Thanks for sharing the story.
