Four days ago I posted a picture of baby Flycatchers in a nest on the downspout next to our the garage. I made the comment that I was on snake patrol. Sure enough, Buddy and I came out of the garage this morning to find Black Snake headed in the direction of the nest. I quickly got Buddy in the house and then used my hiking pole to "encourage" the snake to go in the opposite direction.
About 30 minutes later the Carolina Wrens were having a hissy fit so I went out on the front porch to investigate. Black Snake was back and had brought a friend! Yes! Two black snakes after the baby birds. I chased then both under the front porch and I'm sure as soon as it gets dark, they will get the babies.
The birdies are huge, but apparently aren't ready to fledge. I want to intervene and do something to protect them, like move the nest to a safer (?) location. It's so difficult to sit by and do nothing. Of course this happens less than 24 hours after Hubby leaves....Suggestions?

Oh no! Outside of sitting up all night waiting.....DawgMom says maybe one of those big fake Owls would work, they don't like Owls. HHHMMM??

Eww... I hate snakes! Don't have any suggestions, but I have to say that the tendency for things like that to happen is definitely increased the minute Scott leaves town too.
OMsoG.. those are big/ long snakes!! **shudder**
Dearie me.. I hope those babies will be ok.. I know at the end of the day, it is Mother Nature's call, but it's just so hard to sit back and not do anything!!
We'd probably try to put something up around the nest that the snakes couldn't get through, like screening, but it probably wouldn't work. Hawks have gotten baby birds from a nest in the tree behind our house, despite the horrible squawking of the parent birds and my parents and me trying to scare them away. It's very sad - we're hoping for the best for your baby birdies.

Oh no! We hope the chicks made it through the night. Could you spray the downspout with cooking oil or something slippery (but harmless) that would make it hard for the snakes to climb up? I have no clue if that would work and suspect it will be harder to make the wall slippery. Maybe set up a perimeter of cayenne pepper... I have heard this works to deter some critters but no clue if that includes reptiles.

OMG!!!! Not only one but 2 snakes.... you are a brave woman!!! But you know that Mother Nature has a plan, although we may not always like it.....
OMG....I hope those evil snakes don't get the birdies! :( Evil may be harsh but I am NOT a fan of snakes. Good luck!
