I spied this Black Ratsnake while on my morning walk yesterday. Fortunately, the dogs were in the house, out of the heat.
Black snakes are not harmful and this poor thing was scared to death.
Notice how when startled, it freezes and wrinkles itself into a series of kinks. This snake has only one thing on its mind-retreat!
Given enough space, time, and reassuring words it does exactly that.
Doesn't everyone talk to snakes?
Yes, I know they're deaf.
Are you grossed out yet?
No?
Well, I also saw this scat on the driveway.
Yes, this is a collage of poop!
I thought it might be fox poop, but I've been told it looks more like bear.
It contains blackberry and blueberry seeds.

Any poop experts out there?
Remember, just because you eat it,
doesn't make you an expert!

Snake!!! No, thank you very much.
Ewwww! Ever informative, but more than I wanted to see this morning! will wait to hear from experts! SH
I was waiting for the snake to SNAP!
EEEEK I an glad that we don't have those creatures in NZ, or foxes or bears...
Safe!
Snakes are one of my bigggest fears and even watching your video has me holding my breath--And if I'd seen that snake, that may have been "my accident" on your driveway!! :-)
Fascinating snake how he camouflages into a "branch" when frightened!
Well, if he's a rat snake he sounds like a good snake, as long as he wasn't the rascal after the baby birds climbing on your roof!
I still contend it's bear poo.
LOL
Kathy
cool video of the snake! and i hear you huffing in the background...you go girl!!
i'm only a canine poop expert!
have a great wednesday!
xoxo
Yuh, here is how my momma talks to snakes; SQUEEEEE!
Glad to see that my momma is not the only one with poop photos in her flashy beast. I am hoping that it wasn't bear poop. That would be scary.

Woofs and Licks,

Good Morning Ms K....
Your morning walks are way to exciting for me. As much as I don't like snakes, I'd rather see him than the fellow that deposited the scat on your driveway.
What would the pups have done if they saw the snake?
Madi and Mom
I didn't click to enlarge...I trust you that it has berrys in it :)
I haven't actually spoken to a snake before, but I do talk to my fish Sushi :)
Enjoy your walks :)
Kit, you have a very YUCKY blog today!! Did I actually hear you blow a kiss to that dang snake? And Scat????? Well.........gotta say......you did make me laugh at that! Please be careful where you walk!!! lol
Woof! Woof! That is scary ... n the pooop Oh! My! I can't imagine its from a FOX. Mmmm Be Safe. happy Wednesday. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar
Well, THAT'S an exciting walk! ;-)
What a gorgeous snake! All we have is garders and an occasional poisonous water moccasin. No pretty non-poisonous ones like that snake.
No idea about the poop...it does look sort of bear-ish, though!
WOW! I have never seen a snake and hope I NEVER do...not that I'm scared or anything...I'm MACK! and I'm MANLY!
Yeh - thats my story and I'm sticking to it!
Wags and woofs,
Mack and Mia
I just loved that you saved the snake! I would have cooed at him too.
Keep us updated on the scat...we are intrigued on what has been visiting!
We think he did hear you:) Next time you have any trouble moving a snake, TD says he is a pro - just give him a woo and he will be right there.
Bear scat - now THAT would scare us.
Woos - Phantom, Thunder, and Ciara
Snakes and poop -- you have very interesting blogs! ha ha!
I see enough poop every day to qualify me as an expert, but I try not to think about it! :)
I may not be an X purt on bear poops, butt I did find a big pile once in Pencil Vane E Ah. It looked exactly like that!! There were even some bear tracks right near MY cool mountain stream. That is about 4 feet from where I found the poop. OK???
as for the snnnnnaaaaake... sssssssssssst is all I can say.
We think that is a nice snake! Mom isn't scared of snakes. She says they don't bother you if you don't bother them. She absolutely hates ticks though. She said they had a pet snake at the School Board where she worked years ago. It's name was Checkers. He was just a little guy. No idea what the poop is but it sure looks big! Bear perhaps? Lots of love, Debbie and Holly
Glad we don't have any snakes in this part of the world!
Bella has a nasty habit of rolling in poop..foxes...and it's a devil to wash off!
Bellaboo :0)
Thanks but no Thanks for the snake! We see alot of water snakes were we go walking. It is always fun to have unknown vistors that leave presents around. Good think my friends the labradoodles weren't around they would try to roll in your present.
Hi Kit,
I would say it is bear poop. I can not see really how big it is b/c you don't have anything beside it to scale it. Fox make a pretty big pile too!!! But not as big as a bear.
I talk to snakes too. I know they can't hear me but I still talk to them. I didn't try to see the video. Maybe tomorrow if I get tho all my comments.
Love your visits!!!
Snakes and bears, oh my.
miss kit miss kit miss kit!!!
ahhhhhhhh, that is a HOOGE snake! i am scared of them. my daddy found a corn snake in our backyard last summer, and it scared the poop out of me. speaking of poop, i think that's too much for a fox, so look out for bears! maybe yogi is coming to visit you?
*woof*
the booker man
I had to look up the poop. Fox is tubular like dog. This is a plop like bear, cow, buffalo. You probably do not have a roaming cow or buffalo so the best guess is bear.

Watch out on those early morning walks Cuz.
lol
