On a warm, July evening in 2007, Hubby took Sassy out for her last potty trip of the night. For some reason I had not pulled the car in the garage. As hubby walked on one side of the car, he heard Sassy yelp from the other side. He realized immediately that something serious had happened.
They both came running into the house and the look in Sassy's eyes told me she was in trouble. It was difficult to restrain and examine her, as she was in so much pain, she was trying to run away to escape the agony. Can you imagine?
When we discovered the two, very small puncture wounds, we knew she had been bitten by a snake and needed immediate medical attention.
We live in the "boondocks" and the closest emergency vet is 25 (very long during an emergency) miles away. I think we made the trip in 15 minutes.
( Do the math!)
Sassy was on antibiotics and pain meds for awhile, but the worst therapy was "no swimming" (in July) orders from the VET.
She will always have a scar, as if we needed a reminder of that scary evening.

Wow that pic says it all! You do live in the boonies. :)
The one thing I really don't miss about the south is snakes. I can't imagine having to keep an eye on the dogs all the time...
That was a close one! I would have been scared to death, of the snake and for my dog! So glad this story had a happy ending! Yea, Sassy!
Liz
Oh my!!!! Glad you were able to drive so fast, yikes!
Elizabeth & Luna
Poor Sassy! I am so glad there are no snakes to worry about here, at least our dangerous critters are large and visible from afar...
Must be soooo quiet at night at your house..... xoxoxo
Whoa!!! How scary for poor sassy (not to mention you and hubby. I assume it was not poisonous so it was just (as if that is not enough) the puncture wound that needed treating? How did you know it was not poisonous (sounds like you did not see the snake)? I ask becuase we have encountered snakes 3 times on walks and I wondered what would happen if Moose got bit. I assumed it would not be a big deal if it was not poisonous so it is good to know that it is a big deal! I think If I saw Moose's paws look like that I would rush to the vet too though.
I knew you were in the 'boonies' but that is a cool photo to show just how booney!
Sorry I have not visited in a while- life has kept me busy lately. Hope to catch up soon.
That sounds very scary!
I am glad that we don't have many nasties here in New Zealand!
Super glad that things worked out ok!
I Love the location of your house....perfect :)
but I hate what poor Sassy had to go through :( makes me sad....I'm glad she recovered well and the mean ole snake is gone!!
Well, at least out in the boonies you were less likely to get pulled over for speeding on your way to the hospital. That was a scary story. I am glad it had a happy ending.
Slobbers,
Mango
That's so scary!!!
I saw a snake in our garden once, but it was really tiny and much much smaller than me. But even then, I won't mess with one anymore.
Glad you're okay though!
Sonic
Thank heavens for emergency vets..even 25 miles away! And, yes, I did the math! Poor Sassy...and blessed Sassy! Hate to be dumb, but what kind of snake is that? The header is wonderful! So alive!
wow, what a scary event.....was that the snake that bit Sassy? e-gads!
i've see a couple rattlesnake bites...very expensive for the anti-venom....but all dogs survived.....
you do live in the boonies!!! holy crap....your driveway must be 10miles!? :)

Oh My Dogs Sassy #1 gorgeous header!!
That just makes us so scared to think about that horrible night. Bless your heart and your Mom and Dad must have been petrified on that drive to the ER. Mom actually saw that scar on your foot the other day and meant to ask about it.
Big Hug MADI and Mom
Whoa! That must have been SOO scary! Poor Sassy......it must have hurt a ton :(
Poor Sassy.
Living out in the country has its drawbacks at times, doesn't it...
Oh you poor baby! I am always scared to take Billy out after dark. I sure don't want an ally gator to have him for a midnight snack! Ya just neva know, right? Glad everything turned out all right. Fast drivin too!!!! hehe
Ms K please tell Sassy that her freckles are where kissed by angels....that is what Mom said anyway!!!
Hugs Madi
Oh, scary indeed. We have rattlesnakes around here, and that has always been a fear of mine. I don't know what I would do if we were out hiking and it happened. Glad it turned out ok for your sweetheart. :)
Amber & Nala
OMD OMD That is terrible. What kind of snake was it????
Whew! Lucky to have survived.
Poor Sissy,
We have snakes too!! I am so afraid for that same thing to happened to Bambi!! We have been very lucky!!!
Bambi has got a big old bandage on her right foot. The vet drained her bumbs that were hurting her when she walked. He said they would be back but we hope not right away!!!
XXOO, Bambi & Fern
I cannot imagine the fear you must've felt and time I'm sure stood still as you were driving Sassy to get care!! This is something I also worry about because another friend of mine also had it happen to her dog too and I know how critical time is...I'm glad Sassy was okay, and hope you didn't need too much therapy afterwards! :-)
I've had a dog get bit by a snake as well. It is a horrible thing!
Okay after that I just informed Beth that I do NOT want to live where you live. I will stay with the bears!
I am so sorry about Sassy being bit by that snake. Ouch. I was bit once trying to protect Alex as he ran toward the snake...it got me good. They are mean and deadly. I'm glad Sassy is better now! I love your new header!! Lots oflove, Debbie and Holly
oh my that is super scary
Don't forget, we are now located at dogisgodinreverse.com
That poor Sassy! And what an evil snake!!!
Yikes - Yes, we are about a 45 minute drive to an emergency vet, so always a very scary long time.
How horrible - Mom made Thunder read this post very carefully and she had him study that paw intently - he loves to stalk snakes and play with them. We are so glad you were able to get her such "speedy" treatment.
Woos ~ Phantom, Thunder, and Ciara
Gosh! What a very much skeery thing to happen! My mom is always worrying abouts that at this time of the year. My dad and her want to live in the boondocks, too, but those are the kinda things that you haves to think about, for sure.
I'm SO glad that Sassy got all better!
Wiggles & Wags,
Mayzie
You must have been frantic! Ohmygosh, the horror of it all.SO thrilled to know that she mended. Bet she got better before YOU did☺

Poor Sassy! Hi I'm new here. Came on over from Jack Daddy's. Just wanted to say I'm glad Sassy is doing okay. Sending my Dog Therapy love her way. Woof!
Much love, MB, Josie and Blues
Sassy that breaks my heart! We are so thankful everything worked out okay. Can only imagine the stress of that drive. Kisses to your paw...
OMD lucky Sassy! She's going to be okay. I hope the scar isn't the only reminder and next time she sees a snake, she runs! Better yet, no more snake viewing.
Phew
